The Sonoma Valley is part the Franciscan formation, a ripple of earth made from the subduction of the Pacific tectonic plates. Farallon Plate sliding under the North American continent made the coastal mountains. Prehistoric volcanic activity and it is evident in the soil today.

Hence, the river system also was cut by the volcanic activity. Volcanic, oceanic and river based soil lay the groundwork. Sonoma appellations (AVA)s try to make sense of the terroir. When you depict the Sonoma Valley landscape, you can taste the mixture of complex sub-soils in every glass, one feature laid upon another, a swirl of minerals, the perfect storm for the wine-making success. All of this adds to our journey of enjoying life, sharing and exploring the very best wines together. Tour the Sonoma Valley for its history and geo-winemaking marvels. Come visit Sonoma and let Master Wine Tours assist in the planning.

Sonoma : “Bear Flag Revolution”

Sonoma Valley is entertained by 5 towns – Sonoma, Agua Caliente, Glen Ellen, Kenwood and Santa Rosa. The Sonoma Plaza in the city of Sonoma is the flagship spot of the valley and a location of some historical importance. The Bear Flag revolution started here, an uprising that lead to the forming of the State of California. It is also home to the last of the Spanish Missions, Mission San Francisco Solano (1823). There are many historical buildings telling the remarkable story of early California. In fact, California was born here and many events denoting it’s history take place in the large grassy park that centers the Sonoma Plaza. Fabulous restaurants, word class wine tasting and a little shopping make it a popular stop on many a wine tour.
